Stories by Gene Avery

(Sax man, composer, poet and singer for Dutch Falconi)

I may not know what the hell I'm talking about, but I sometimes think that Gene Avery is a bit like William Burroughs, except on two counts:

1. Gene is a really nice guy (Burroughs is an asshole).

2. Gene was not born with the silver spoon in his mouth (Burroughs never had to worry about money).

It's interesting that Gene, who scribbles his entire life into an ancient 8088 processor (with 5 1/4 floppies) from a modest apartment in Downtown Sacramento, and who does not enjoy the international fame and success that Burroughs has attained, still maintains an optimistic view on life. Burroughs, who's never had to worry about much other than where his next fix was coming from, has that "We're all in a world of shit" attitude in his writings. It makes you wonder.
